Day-By-Day Tour Plan
8:00 AM – Hotel Pick-Up and Drive to Materuni Village
Your day begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha by your guide and driver. The drive takes about 30–40 minutes, passing through beautiful Tanzanian countryside, with views of local farms, lush greenery, and Mount Kilimanjaro towering in the distance. As you approach Materuni, you’ll begin to notice the distinct beauty of the village, nestled in the fertile foothills of Kilimanjaro.
9:00 AM – Arrive at Materuni Village
Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by the local Chagga people, known for their warmth and hospitality. You’ll start your day with a cultural introduction to the village and the Chagga community. Your guide will explain the fascinating history and traditions of the Chagga people, including their unique farming practices, their role in the region’s history, and their deep connection to Mount Kilimanjaro. You’ll learn about the Chagga people’s traditional farming methods, particularly their cultivation of crops like bananas, coffee, and vegetables.
9:30 AM – Coffee Tour and Tasting
A highlight of the Materuni Day Trip is the coffee experience, as the Chagga are renowned for their coffee-growing expertise. You’ll take a guided tour of a local coffee farm, where you’ll witness the coffee-making process from start to finish. You’ll learn how the coffee is harvested, processed, and roasted using traditional methods. The experience includes a hands-on demonstration, where you can try your hand at grinding and roasting the beans yourself. Afterward, you’ll enjoy a fresh, aromatic cup of coffee—some of the best you’ll ever taste.
11:00 AM – Waterfall Trek
After the coffee experience, you’ll embark on a short guided hike to the Materuni Waterfall, one of the most stunning natural features in the area. The hike takes around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace. As you trek through the lush, tropical forest, you’ll pass by local farms and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The trail is surrounded by vibrant vegetation, including banana plants, giant ferns, and wildflowers, with occasional glimpses of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
Upon reaching the waterfall, you’ll be treated to an awe-inspiring view of the 100-meter-high waterfall cascading down into a crystal-clear pool below. The waterfall is surrounded by dense forest, making it a perfect spot for photos and a peaceful moment in nature. You’ll have the opportunity to cool off with a refreshing swim in the pool, or simply relax and enjoy the breathtaking surroundings.
1:00 PM – Picnic Lunch
After the waterfall trek, you’ll return to the village, where a delicious picnic lunch awaits. The meal typically includes a variety of traditional Tanzanian dishes, such as rice, vegetables, beans, fresh fruit, and locally made bread. You’ll enjoy your meal while seated outdoors, surrounded by the stunning scenery of Mount Kilimanjaro’s foothills.
2:00 PM – Cultural Experience and Exploration
After lunch, you’ll have the chance to explore more of the village and interact with local villagers. You can visit the traditional Chagga homesteads, where you may be invited to see how the locals live and learn more about their cultural practices. Your guide will share more stories about the Chagga people, including their music, dance, and festivals.
3:00 PM – Return to Moshi or Arusha
With memories of the waterfall and the rich cultural experiences of the day, you’ll begin your journey back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. The return trip offers a last chance to enjoy the beauty of the countryside and Mount Kilimanjaro from a different perspective.
4:30 PM – Arrival at Hotel
You’ll arrive back at your hotel by late afternoon, having experienced a day full of culture, nature, and unforgettable memories.
