Itinerary
Day-By-Day Tour Plan
6:00 AM – Hotel Pickup and Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park
Your day begins early with a pick-up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. A private vehicle will drive you to the Machame Gate or Marangu Gate, depending on the route you choose for your hike. This drive takes about an hour, during which your guide will brief you on the hike, the day’s schedule, and what to expect.
7:30 AM – Registration and Gear Check
Upon arrival at the gate, you’ll complete the necessary registration and sign in at the Kilimanjaro National Park office. Your guide will ensure you have the proper gear for the hike, including a water bottle, sunscreen, and a light snack. This is also where you’ll meet your support team, including porters who carry extra equipment and supplies.
8:00 AM – Begin the Hike
The hike begins as you enter the Montane Forest Zone, one of the most lush and vibrant ecosystems on the mountain. You’ll walk through dense rainforests, which are home to various species of birds, monkeys, and other wildlife. The trail is well-maintained and the elevation gain is gradual, making the initial portion of the hike relatively easy. The forest is alive with sounds from the wildlife, and the towering trees create a cool, shaded environment as you ascend.
11:30 AM – Scenic Viewpoint
After approximately 3 to 4 hours of hiking, you will reach a scenic viewpoint at about 2,800 meters (9,186 feet). From here, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and, if the weather is clear, you may even spot Kilimanjaro’s summit in the distance. This spot is perfect for taking photos and relaxing while your guide provides information about the mountain’s geological history and diverse ecosystems.
12:00 PM – Picnic Lunch
Enjoy a packed picnic lunch at the viewpoint, with scenic views as your backdrop. The lunch typically includes sandwiches, fruits, and light snacks, along with plenty of water to keep you hydrated. This rest period is an opportunity to relax, take in the stunning surroundings, and socialize with fellow hikers.
1:00 PM – Continue to Mandara Hut (Optional)
After lunch, if time and energy permit, you may continue to the Mandara Hut, located around 2,700 meters (8,858 feet). This area is a common rest stop for multi-day trekkers on the Marangu route. Here, you’ll see the famous alpine vegetation, such as giant lobelias and senecios. The additional hike to Mandara Hut will take around 1–2 hours, but it’s optional, depending on how much time you have before beginning your descent.
2:30 PM – Begin the Descent
After reaching your turnaround point for the day, you’ll begin the descent back to the gate. The return journey is quicker as the trail is mostly downhill, offering a different perspective on the landscape you’ve just explored. While descending, you may encounter other trekkers on their way up, providing an opportunity to share stories.
4:30 PM – Return to the Gate
You will reach the gate in the late afternoon, where your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. The descent marks the end of your one-day adventure, and you’ll have time to relax and reflect on your experience. Many hikers find the day both physically satisfying and emotionally rewarding, knowing they’ve experienced the incredible beauty of Kilimanjaro in a limited timeframe.
